Expecting…..

(A devotional and prayer over the life of a little Wildflower…..)

The Dad of a young girl we know recently asked me if I would speak a blessing/devotional at his daughter’s upcoming baby shower. Well of course I would! We love Nicole and her Mom and Dad, and we were so excited to celebrate the joy of this family as they looked to welcome “the first baby”! I particularly loved the shower invitation…… it started out, “A Little Wildflower is almost here”. (This child is being given a beautiful, proper name….. but I think she might just always be Wildflower to me!) Well, the day arrived, and it was all beautiful and lovely….. as most baby showers are! And afterwards, Nicole contacted me and asked if I could put together what I had said in a written format that she could keep forever and refer back to often. Well of course I could! I was so moved and touched by this young family and their heart to want to always remember. And so the process began, and at a point I wound up forwarding a copy to our daughter. I was actually surprised at how affected she was by it all……. but then it was her first-born that is referenced as having been born 16 years earlier, and whose journey launched the “Mighty Warrior” prayer vigil! She was asking me who it had been that had prayed that prayer that had so affected me. She wondered if it was Mark Tankersley. It was. And while I only met him that one time, the impact of that prayer has followed me these past 16 years….. and I’d like to think that it will live on still — in the life of Nicole and Peter and little Wildflower, — as well as others who might happen to read this. Our daughter Jennifer asked me to put this on my blog, ….. and of course I will! I just love the thought of fruit that lasts! (John 15:16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit — fruit that will last — and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.)

  1. What a beautiful challenge for the parents of little Wildflower and for us. I do love that prayer as well! Ah, there is so much that can be written about expectations, but I love that you focused on the Truth. It makes me think of the Biblical definition of “hope” – looking with expectation and trust. I’m glad Jennifer asked you to share. It was a blessing to read!

  2. As the Dad who asked you, I can’t say thank you enough!! You and Carl are such a blessing to me and my family. From the meals you made me while serving on a committee to the conversations at a fellowship dinner to asking you to pray for a youth retreat to asking you to share words of encouragement for my daughter’s baby shower. You have been and will continue to be an example for me and others of how to be the hands and feet of our Savior. Much love Darryl ❤

  3. Yes, I am thankful you shared this. Much to ponder for the young. I wish I had had a mentor as you when I was blindly trying to find my way as a new mom. I will keep this and give it to a new mother in the future. Very powerful! 😇
